Driving Austin: what the roads are really like

I-35 through central Austin is old, narrow and in the middle of a multi-year rebuild. Lane shifts move from week to week, concrete barriers leave no shoulder, and exit ramps come up fast. Rush hour starts early and ends late, and a single fender-bender on the decks can back traffic up past Riverside in minutes.

Outside the core, the roads are newer but faster. SH 130 carries trucks at high speed with long gaps between exits, and the farm roads feeding the new factories weren't built for this many heavy trucks. Sudden spring storms and flash flooding in low water crossings add risk, especially after dark.

Where big rig wrecks cluster in Austin

• I-35 upper and lower decks, central Austin. Stacked lanes with short exits, tight shoulders and heavy rebuild work, so a stalled truck has almost nowhere to go.
• I-35 through Round Rock and Georgetown. Suburban growth has piled commuter traffic on top of the Laredo-to-Dallas freight stream.
• SH 71 and US-183 near the airport. Airport traffic, construction trucks and factory freight bound for east Travis County all funnel through here.
• SH 130 south of the city. High posted speeds on a toll road that many trucks use to skip downtown, which makes any slowdown dangerous.

The freight behind Austin truck traffic

Austin isn't a port town, but it builds and receives a lot. The Tesla plant in east Travis County and the Samsung chip fab going up near Taylor in Williamson County pull steady truck traffic: steel, concrete, equipment and finished product. Add the endless construction across the metro, and many of the rigs you see are dump trucks, flatbeds and mixers, not just through-haul vans on I-35 between Mexico and the Midwest. SH 130 was built partly to give that through traffic a way around the city.

If you were driving the truck

If you were hauling into one of Austin's big job sites or plants, write down the gate you used, the site contact and the time you checked in. Construction crashes often involve a general contractor, a subcontractor and a trucking company, and each will have a different story about who controlled the road or the staging area. Hang onto your ELD data, photos of any cones or signs that were missing or confusing, and your load paperwork. If the company or its insurer wants a recorded statement right away, talk with an attorney first.

If a big rig hit your car

If a truck hit your car on I-35 or a feeder road, photograph the lane layout as it was that day, because the construction pattern may be gone next week. Get the truck's company name and USDOT number off the cab door, and look for any logo of a builder or plant on the trailer or dump bed. Ask witnesses for a phone number, not just a name.
